Exercise: a change in routine

The tutor shares a discovery about his exercise routine.

Last year, I did three 25 minute walks per week, then two harder cardio workouts, 15 to 45 minutes each. The routine worked: as the year progressed, my condition improved. I ended June at a happy 180lbs and very fit (for your average working person).

Summer came, and of course that routine went out the window. I played basketball with the kids and went out for walks in the woods with them. I fit in a run, ride (stationary bike) or skipping when I could. However, it never added up to my routine during the school months. I gained about eight pounds over the summer – one pound per week, more or less.

Since my family’s return to school (my kids are in school, while my wife works there), my routine has changed again. Because of the need to leave the car with my wife, I do five 25 minute walks per week. So far, time has allowed for only one hard workout per week.

I wondered: would the new routine, with five walks instead of three, but only one hard workout per week rather than two, be as successful as last year’s routine? So far, it has been: I’ve lost five pounds since school started.

Often in life, little bits of effort, applied frequently, seem to help more than large amounts of effort applied less often. My new exercise routine might be such a case; learning also is.

I’ll be sharing more thoughts about exercise in coming posts:)
