Lifestyle: calorie-wise desserts: fruitcake?

Maintaining calorie consciousness means constant self-tutoring. The tutor shares that fruitcake may be surprisingly calorie wise.

My wife brought home a fruitcake a couple of days ago. I’m the only one of our family who likes fruitcake, but since I’m trying to lose a few pounds, I was a bit worried. Would eating the fruitcake stall my weight loss? Not necessarily.

The fruitcake she bought is by Weston Bakeries, out of Toronto. It’s topped with pecans but not iced. Per 83g, it carries 280 calories.

By way of comparison I looked at a bagel with margarine. The bagel is 190 calories (for 75g). Next, a teaspoon of margarine we buy carries 35 calories and has mass 4.5g. I can easily imagine putting a teaspoon of margarine on each half of a freshly toasted bagel. That brings the toasted bagel, with the margarine, to 260 calories, and 84g.

So, gram for gram, the fruitcake is about 20/260, or 8%, more calorie dense than a toasted bagel with margarine.

The reason the fruitcake is (to my mind, anyway) surprisingly low in calories is that it’s less than 10 percent fat.

I’ll eat the fruitcake, little by little:)
