Electronic lifestyle: calendar apps part 0: appointment reminders

Self-tutoring about practical uses for computers: the tutor mentions setting an appointment reminder.

When it comes to calendar apps, I’m late to the party, no doubt. I think I’ve used calendar apps less than a dozen times my whole life. The reason is that I use an appointment book – a paper one – to write my appointments, which I leave open at tomorrow’s date each evening.

Lately, however, I live in two places, and don’t have an appointment book at the other one. Life at the other place follows a strict routine, so a few appointments I might have forgotten, even my friends down there could remind me about.

Nowadays, however, life at the other place is less routine, with more “special” circumstances. Yesterday I set an appointment I knew I might forget, but couldn’t afford to – it’s especially tricky. I wondered how to remind myself: the appointment’s in a few days, at which time I will be alone.

I use the on-board Clock app on this device (Windows 11) to good effect: every morning it announces 7:30 with a bouncy little jingle. I wondered if it could be used to remind me of an appointment, so looked it up online.

It turns out that, with the Windows 11 Calendar app, a reminder is built right in. I think the default is 15min, but you can choose 0 minutes before, a week before, or many options between. I’ve already tried it with a test event – sure enough, the reminder pops up bottom left. You can dismiss it or snooze it away.

If you’re away from your computer when the reminder goes off, I guess that’s another thing. However, who’s away from their computer very long, these days?
