Remembering that a directory is analogous to a folder, I mainly use<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:olive;font-family:monospace\">pwd<\/span> shows where you are (print working directory)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:olive;font-family:monospace\">ls<\/span> shows the files and other directories within your present one<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:olive;font-family:monospace\">cd ..<\/span> backs you up one level (cd for change directory)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:olive;font-family:monospace\">cd <i>directory_name<\/i><\/span> places you in that directory<\/p>\n<p>The potential problem with a USB drive:  do you know where it is (or what it&#8217;s called)?<\/p>\n<p>When I plug in a USB, I can find it in the <span style=\"font-family:monospace\">media<\/span> directory, visible from the top level directory.  However, when I invoke the terminal, it doesn&#8217;t put me at the top level directory but rather at my home directory.  I have to back up a couple of levels to reach the top directory.  From there, I can enter <span style=\"font-family:monospace;color:olive\">ls<\/span>, then see the <span style=\"font-family:monospace\">media<\/span> directory among the listings.<\/p>\n<p>The media directory can then be entered:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:monospace;color:olive\">cd media<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Checking its contents thus:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:monospace;color:olive\">ls<\/code><\/p>\n<p>you might see a list of users rather than the USB drive itself.  Entering your own directory<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:monospace;color:olive\">cd my_user_name<\/span><\/p>\n<p>you might then list its contents<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:monospace;color:olive\">ls<\/span><\/p>\n<p>to find the USB drive.  The computer might give it a name based on its model number rather than a recognizable handle.
