Maybe you make a table:

a

b

c

1

2

√5

2

2

√8

3

4

5

……….

Of course, you’re probably really interested in sets of values for which c is a whole number:

c=√(a^2+b^2), c any whole number

Using the Sharp El-520W, there’s a convenient way to find such sets of numbers. Sharp calls it simulation calculation. Here is how to enter the formula on the EL-520W:

Press MODE then 0

Press 2nd F then x^2 then (

Press ALPHA, then CNST, then the x^2 key. You’ll see A^2 on the screen.

Continue entering the formula: + ALPHA then the y^x key, then x^2, then ) =

Now, press 2nd F MATH. Your formula will appear, with A flashing. You can key in the value you want for A, then press =, at which time B will start flashing. You can now key in the desired B value, then press =. The value of √(A^2 + B^2) will appear. For instance, if you key in 6 for A and 7 for B, you’ll get 9.219544457 output.

By trying various values of A and B, one can conveniently discover which C values are whole numbers – in this case, thanks to the Sharp EL-520W.

HTH:)

Sources:

Sharp EL-520W Operation Manual.

w3schools

Jack of Oracle Tutoring by Jack and Diane, Campbell River, BC.

The tutor shows another feature of the Sharp EL-520W: simulation calculation, aka repetitive calculations with a formula.
