They have compound leaves.  My guide suggests they are mountain-ash.<\/p>\n<p>One I examined closely has sharp-pointed leaflets; I believe it to be western mountain-ash (Sorbus scopulina).  However, sitka mountain-ash (Sorbus sitchensis) is supposedly more common here on the coast.  The guide suggests that mountain-ash prefers middle to high elevations, but also parkland, clearings, and streambanks.
