At a glance, the leaves were different:  they were truncated.  You can see what I mean:  just scroll down on <a href=\"http:\/\/treesofsantacruzcounty.blogspot.ca\/2013\/07\/liriodendron-tulipifera-tulip-tree.html\">this page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before today, I&#8217;ve never recognized a tulip tree.  To my knowledge they don&#8217;t grow naturally out here; they&#8217;re from the eastern US.
