{"id":1232,"date":"2013-01-09T18:37:05","date_gmt":"2013-01-09T18:37:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/?p=1232"},"modified":"2013-01-09T18:51:16","modified_gmt":"2013-01-09T18:51:16","slug":"english-your-old-friends-who-and-whom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/english-your-old-friends-who-and-whom\/","title":{"rendered":"English:  Your old friends who and whom"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Tutoring English, you&#8217;re bound to be asked when to use <em>who<\/em> vs when to use <em>whom<\/em>.<\/h1>\n<p>&#8220;Whom do you love?&#8221;\u00a0 asked George Thorogood.\u00a0 Actually, I think he asked &#8220;<em>Who<\/em> do you love?&#8221;\u00a0 However, he should have used <em>whom<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Whom<\/em> is for object, whereas <em>who<\/em> is for subject.\u00a0 Therefore, the following are correct:<\/p>\n<p><em>Who<\/em> loves you?<\/p>\n<p><em>Whom<\/em> do you love?<\/p>\n<p>With <em>whom<\/em>ever you discuss <em>who <\/em>and <em>whom<\/em>, remember the distinction: \u00a0<em>whom<\/em> for object, <em>who<\/em> for subject.\u00a0 However, in a complicated sentence, the object of one verb can be the subject of another.\u00a0 If it&#8217;s a subject, use <em>who<\/em> &#8211; even if it&#8217;s also an object of another verb or preposition.<\/p>\n<p>Give the copies to <em>whom<\/em>ever you like.<\/p>\n<p>Give the copies to <em> who<\/em>ever asks for them.<\/p>\n<p>In the second sentence, the &#8220;who&#8221; asks for the copies, making that person the subject of &#8220;asks&#8221;.\u00a0 Therefore, use &#8220;who&#8221; rather than &#8220;whom&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>How do you tell object and subject apart?\u00a0 With verbs, the subject <em>does<\/em> the action, while the object <em>receives<\/em> the action.\u00a0 With prepositions, the object follows the preposition.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nJack of <a href=\"..\/\">Oracle Tutoring by Jack and Diane<\/a>, Campbell River, BC.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tutoring English, you&#8217;re bound to be asked when to use who vs when to use whom. &#8220;Whom do you love?&#8221;\u00a0 asked George Thorogood.\u00a0 Actually, I think he asked &#8220;Who do you love?&#8221;\u00a0 However, he should have used whom.
