Example 1:<\/p>\n

Let’s imagine a part has mean lifetime thirty-six months, with standard deviation ten months. What minimum time will it last, with 95% confidence?

\nSolution:<\/p>\n

Let’s use \u03bc for mean, and \u03c3 for standard deviation.<\/p>\n

From the normal table, 95% of the distribution is less than \u03bc + 1.645\u03c3.\u00a0 By symmetry, 95% is more than \u03bc – 1.645\u03c3.\u00a0 Therefore, 95% of the time, the part will last more than
\n36 – 1.645×10 months, or 19.55 months.<\/p>\n

Note this confidence interval makes no guess at the top of the life span.\u00a0 I’ll talk about other confidence intervals in future posts.<\/p>\n
