{"id":13839,"date":"2016-01-11T18:15:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-11T18:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/?p=13839"},"modified":"2017-09-12T16:56:17","modified_gmt":"2017-09-12T16:56:17","slug":"subtracting-with-mixed-numerals-borrowing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/subtracting-with-mixed-numerals-borrowing\/","title":{"rendered":"Subtracting with mixed numerals:  borrowing"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>The tutor shows a method of subtracting mixed numerals.<\/h1>\n<p>Imagine facing a question such as the following:<\/p>\n<p>5 1\/7 &#8211; 2 2\/3<\/p>\n<p>A convenient approach is &#8220;number minus number, fraction minus fraction&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p>5-2 + 1\/7-2\/3<\/p>\n<p>The trouble here is, 1\/7 &lt; 2\/3. A way out is to borrow one whole from the 5:<\/p>\n<p>4-2 + 1 \u00a01\/7-2\/3<\/p>\n<p>Next, we convert 1 \u00a01\/7 to an improper fraction (see my post <a href=\"?p=2680\">here<\/a> for how to do so).<\/p>\n<p>2 + 8\/7-2\/3<\/p>\n<p>To subtract the fractions, we need common demoninators:<\/p>\n<p>2 + (8&#215;3)\/(7&#215;3) &#8211; (2&#215;7)\/(3&#215;7)<\/p>\n<p>which gives<\/p>\n<p>2 + 24\/21 &#8211; 14\/21<\/p>\n<p>With common denominators, we subtract the fractions:<\/p>\n<p>2 10\/21<\/p>\n<p>Another way to subtract mixed numerals is to put them in improper fraction form at the beginning.
