{"id":14413,"date":"2016-02-18T18:55:33","date_gmt":"2016-02-18T18:55:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/?p=14413"},"modified":"2016-02-18T18:57:26","modified_gmt":"2016-02-18T18:57:26","slug":"physics-calculating-force-of-friction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/physics-calculating-force-of-friction\/","title":{"rendered":"Physics:  calculating force of friction"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>The tutor shows a basic example of calculating friction.<\/h1>\n<p>The force of friction, F<sub>f<\/sub>, on a flat surface is given by<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;font-weight:bold\">F<sub>f<\/sub> = &mu;F<sub>N<\/sub><\/p>\n<p>where<\/p>\n<p>&mu; = coefficient of friction (often looked up from a table, or given)<\/p>\n<p>F<sub>N<\/sub> = normal force:  pushing force from surface to object at 90&deg; to surface<\/p>\n<p>Nearly always, F<sub>N<\/sub> = mg, where<\/p>\n<p>m = mass of object<\/p>\n<p>g = acceleration due to gravity (typically 9.8m\/s<sup>2<\/sup> on Earth)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example 1:  Calculate the force of friction between the tires and the road, dry conditions (&mu; = 0.40), for a 1400 kg car. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Solution:<\/p>\n<p>F<sub>f<\/sub> = &mu;F<sub>N<\/sub> = &mu;mg = 0.40(1400)(9.8)= 5488N or 5500N in sig figs<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be covering more about friction in coming posts:)<\/p>\n<p>Source:<\/p>\n<p>Heath, Robert W. et al.  <u>Fundamentals of Physics<\/u>.
