{"id":1597,"date":"2013-03-31T18:19:43","date_gmt":"2013-03-31T18:19:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/?p=1597"},"modified":"2013-03-31T18:38:07","modified_gmt":"2013-03-31T18:38:07","slug":"math-the-statement-and-the-contrapositive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/math-the-statement-and-the-contrapositive\/","title":{"rendered":"Math:  The Statement and the Contrapositive"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: left;\">For a few years, this topic fell from view. \u00a0As a math tutor, I&#8217;m glad to see it back.<\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To a person studying logic, the statement &#8220;p implies q&#8221; also means &#8220;if p, then q&#8221;. \u00a0It can also be written<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">p\u2192q<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Example of a statement:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If a minute has passed, then sixty seconds have passed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">p and q, by themselves, might be called assertions. \u00a0Therefore, in the above statement, &#8220;a minute has passed&#8221; is an assertion. \u00a0So is &#8220;sixty seconds have passed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To form the contrapositive of a statement, you reverse its order, then negate both parts of the statement:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If sixty seconds <strong>have not<\/strong> passed, then a minute <strong>has not<\/strong> passed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In logic notation, you negate an assertion by writing a line above it:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"..\/notp.png\" \/><br \/>\nIt follows that the construction of the contrapositive is<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"..\/notqnotp.png\" \/><br \/>\nI&#8217;m told that, in general terms, the contrapositive is the logical equivalent to the statement itself. From what I&#8217;ve seen myself, I&#8217;ve no cause to doubt that assertion:)<\/p>\n<p>There are other logical derivatives of a statement: the converse and the inverse, to name a couple.
