Often, in those books, <em>tyre<\/em> referred to the rubber around a car&#8217;s wheels.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian Tire, of course, gives an example of how we typically spell the British <em>tyre<\/em>:  <em>tire<\/em>, rather than <em>tyre<\/em>.  Which spelling should we be using?<\/p>\n<p>My <u>Collins Essential Canadian English Dictionary &#038; Thesaurus<\/u> doesn&#8217;t define <em>tire<\/em> as a noun; rather, it says tire is a verb that means to fatigue, etc.  It defines <em>tyre<\/em>, only, as the rubber around a car&#8217;s wheels.  In contrast, my <u>Oxford Canadian Dictionary of Current English<\/u> doesn&#8217;t contain the word <em>tyre<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><u>Merriam-Webster<\/u> &#8211; Yank, of course &#8211; includes <em>tyre<\/em>, saying it&#8217;s a British spelling of <em>tire<\/em>, meaning the rubber around a car&#8217;s wheels.<\/p>\n<p>Curious, eh?<\/p>\n<p>Jack of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\">Oracle Tutoring by Jack and Diane,<\/a> Campbell River, BC.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The tutor discusses a spelling he&#8217;s long wondered about.
