The tutor tells about using the Fill button to extend a number pattern.<\/h1>\n

If you want a really quick way to extend a series of numbers, here’s how in Excel (2007):<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \nIn adjacent cells, enter the known numbers of the pattern. Then, select them, and extend the selection across the cells you want to follow the trend.<\/li>\n
  2. \nClick the Fill button. On the Home pane, it’s in the Editing suite, top right. It’s a downward arrow.\n<\/li>\n
  3. \nA menu will appear. Select Series…<\/strong>\n<\/li>\n
  4. \nYou need to select Linear<\/strong> or Growth<\/strong>. If you think the number will change by a constant value each time, select Linear<\/strong>. If you think the number will change by a constant percentage each time, select Growth<\/strong>. (See the next step for perspective.)\n<\/li>\n
  5. Age, for example, increases by a constant value. On the other hand, a compound interest investment or a population will tend to increase by a constant percentage. (Some physical processes, like the heat felt when approaching a fire, don’t follow either pattern.)\n<\/li>\n
  6. \nHaving chosen either Linear<\/strong> or Growth<\/strong>, now check Trend<\/strong>, then OK.\n<\/li>\n
  7. \nHopefully you’ll see your trend extend across the selected cells.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
