The data is collected in pairs, one to each sample, and then the difference is taken in each case.  Typically, the mean of the differences is then tested against 0. It&#8217;s a t-test because the standard deviation of the differences is computed from the sample data, rather than being known previously.<\/p>\n<p>A t-test requires that the underlying population be normally distributed.  Can that always be assumed for the matched-pairs test?  The answer is that even if the underlying population is not normal, the mean of the sample will tend to be, especially for large sample sizes.  &#8220;Large&#8221; typically means 30, but even 15 can be tolerated.<\/p>\n<p>Because it tests the mean, the matched-pairs t-test makes appropriate use of the t-distribution.<\/p>\n<p>Source:<\/p>\n<p>Harnett, Donald L. and James L.
