The tutor examines the idea that internal combustion engines are more efficient in cold weather.<\/h1>\n

An upper limit for efficiency of an internal combustion engine is<\/p>\n

eff = (Tcombust<\/sub> – Tsurrounding<\/sub>)\/Tcombust<\/sub><\/p>\n

where<\/p>\n

Tcombust<\/sub> is the temp of the combustion cylinder<\/p>\n

Tcombust<\/sub>, Tsurrounding<\/sub> both in degrees Kelvin (Celsius + 273).<\/p>\n

Let’s imagine a diesel engine, whose average internal cylinder temperature might be around 1600\u00b0C. Then at outdoor temp of 25\u00b0C (293K) we have<\/p>\n

eff = (1873 – 298)\/1873 = 84.1%<\/p>\n

Likewise, at outdoor temp -25\u00b0C we have<\/p>\n

eff = (1873 – 248)\/1873 = 86.8%<\/p>\n

The 2.7% increase in efficiency at -25\u00b0C vs 25\u00b0C may be noticeable to an operator.<\/p>\n
