{"id":1957,"date":"2013-06-08T17:48:44","date_gmt":"2013-06-08T17:48:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/?p=1957"},"modified":"2013-06-08T17:51:53","modified_gmt":"2013-06-08T17:51:53","slug":"english-using-conjunctive-adverbs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/english-using-conjunctive-adverbs\/","title":{"rendered":"English:  Using conjunctive adverbs"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>When you tutor English, conjunctive adverbs come up &#8211; especially around due dates for important English compositions.<\/h1>\n<p>Following a semicolon, a conjunctive adverb can be used. \u00a0It leads to an attractive construction that can elevate your essay.<\/p>\n<p><em>Their best pitcher was benched; <strong>nonetheless<\/strong>, they won the game.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I prefer pasta to meat; <strong>however<\/strong>, I really enjoyed your tacos.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the above sentences, &#8220;nonetheless&#8221; and &#8220;however&#8221; are conjunctive adverbs. \u00a0In each case, the conjunctive adverb is placed after the semicolon. \u00a0The idea that follows &#8211; which must be a complete thought on its own &#8211; is rather surprising, given the idea that precedes the semicolon.<\/p>\n<p>Conjunctive adverbs don&#8217;t have to lead to surprise. \u00a0Consider the following:<\/p>\n<p><em>Put the cake in a preheated 350 degree oven; <strong>next<\/strong>, start the icing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the above sentence, &#8220;next&#8221; is a conjunctive adverb.<\/p>\n<p>A conjunctive adverb is a word that links two ideas (hence, conjunctive), while describing a connection between the actions of each. \u00a0Often, the connection is irony: with however or nonetheless, the second idea seems surprising relative to the first.
