What if you need log base 5, for instance?<\/p>\n<p>Of course, most people familiar with logs know the change of base trick<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">log<sub>p<\/sub>q = logq\/logp (both logs now in base 10)<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, log<sub>5<\/sub>8 = log8\/log5 = 1.2920&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Excel and LibreOffice Calc will evaluate the log in a base you specify.  The function for both is<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;font-family:monospace;font-size:110%\">=log(number, base)<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, if you enter<\/p>\n<p>=log(216, 6)<\/p>\n<p>you will receive the answer 3.
