While\u00a0enjoying this surprisingly fine summer, the math tutor recalls a definition.<\/h1>\n

When I was a kid, I read in one of my math texts\u00a0(it might have been grade six) that a “perfect number” is one whose factors (except itself, of course) sum to it.<\/p>\n

Example:\u00a0 6 is a perfect number.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Factors of 6:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 1, 2, 3, 6<\/p>\n

Sum of factors (excluding 6 itself):\u00a0 1+2+3=6<\/p>\n

Example:\u00a0\u00a028 is a perfect number.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Factors of 28:\u00a0\u00a0 1,\u00a02, 4, 7, 14, 28<\/p>\n

Sum of factors (excluding 28 itself):\u00a0\u00a0 1+2+4+7+14=28<\/p>\n

I always thought it was an interesting definition.\u00a0 Curiosities like this are great;\u00a0they keep you\u00a0thinking about math when you don’t have to do any:)<\/p>\n
