The tutor shares an idea about the word <em>replace<\/em>.<\/h1>\n<p>We all know the typical meaning of the word <em>replace<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family:monospace;font-size:120%\">replace: to substitute a thing with another of similar appearance or use<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s focus, for a moment, on the <em>literal<\/em> meaning of <strong>re-place<\/strong>.  To do so, we consider the definition of the <strong>verb<\/strong> <em>place<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family:monospace;font-size:120%\">place: to put or set in an appropriate position: <span style=\"font-style:oblique\">he placed the pitcher in the centre of the table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>By the meaning of the verb <em>place<\/em>, can&#8217;t <em>replace<\/em> mean the following?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family:monospace;font-size:120%\">replace: to put or set again in an appropriate position<\/p>\n<p>An example of my literal meaning of the word <em>replace<\/em> is as follows:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family:monospace; font-size:120%\">After watering one quadrant of the lawn for half an hour, he <span style=\"font-style:oblique\">replaced<\/span> the sprinkler in an adjacent quadrant.<\/p>\n<p>Makes sense, no? <\/p>\n<p>Neither dictionary I consulted offers my opinion:)<\/p>\n<p>Source:<\/p>\n<p>Merriam-Webster. <i>The Merriam-Webster Dictionary<\/i>.
