{"id":223,"date":"2012-09-08T07:26:47","date_gmt":"2012-09-08T07:26:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/?p=223"},"modified":"2012-09-08T07:26:47","modified_gmt":"2012-09-08T07:26:47","slug":"the-double-l-controversy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/the-double-l-controversy\/","title":{"rendered":"The double &#8216;l&#8217; controversy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The other day my wife Diane got on my case about my spelling of &#8220;canceled&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p>Diane:\u00a0 You spelled canceled wrong.\u00a0 It only has one l.\u00a0 There should be two.<\/p>\n<p>Jack:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You can spell it either way.<\/p>\n<p>Diane:\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been a tutor here in Campbell River since 1986.\u00a0 It needs two &#8220;l&#8221;s.<\/p>\n<p>The first dictionary I checked was a Brit one; of course, it backed her up.\u00a0 Then I got a Webster&#8217;s, and it says both &#8220;canceled&#8221; and &#8220;cancelled&#8221; are okay.<\/p>\n<p>The general rule I was taught is that if the last syllable is unaccented, you don&#8217;t have to double the final consonant.\u00a0 So travelling can be traveling as well:\u00a0 both are fine, according to Webster&#8217;s (which is Yank, of course).<\/p>\n<p>Diane still wasn&#8217;t satisfied; she likes the doubling of the consonant.\u00a0 For her, only travelling and cancelling will do.<\/p>\n<p>You be the judge.<\/p>\n<p>Jack of <a title=\"Oracle Tutoring by Jack and Diane, Campbell River, BC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\">Oracle Tutoring by Jack and Diane<\/a>, Campbell River, BC.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The other day my wife Diane got on my case about my spelling of &#8220;canceled&#8221;: Diane:\u00a0 You spelled canceled wrong.\u00a0 It only has one l.\u00a0 There should be two.
