The tutor shares a long-term observation.<\/h1>\n<p>My older son, on some sandwiches, doesn&#8217;t want margarine at all &#8211; rather, just straight mayonnaise. Lately, making fried egg sandwiches for myself, I&#8217;ve decided to follow his lead.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve long wondered about a reason to use mayo vs margarine on sandwiches &#8211; besides taste, of course. Yesterday I decided to consult the label of each.<\/p>\n<p>The mayonnaise I use offers about 100 calories per tablespoon, vs 105 for the margarine. Really, the fact is not too surprising: so far as I know, fats and oils have the highest calorie density of any food. The mayonnaise I use is about 70% oil, while the margarine is about 80%.<\/p>\n<p>Compared with the mayo, the margarine has more saturated fat as well &#8211; about 1.5g per tbsp, vs 1g per tbsp from the mayo.
