{"id":2415,"date":"2013-09-12T00:17:28","date_gmt":"2013-09-12T00:17:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/?p=2415"},"modified":"2013-09-12T00:17:28","modified_gmt":"2013-09-12T00:17:28","slug":"english-two-common-sentence-faults","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/english-two-common-sentence-faults\/","title":{"rendered":"English:  two common sentence faults"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Tutoring English, you deal with these issues constantly. \u00a0In this post, the English tutor sheds light on a couple of common sentence faults.<\/h1>\n<p>You burnt the cake she is furious. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<em>fused sentence<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You burnt the cake, she is furious. \u00a0 \u00a0 <em>comma splice<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Neither the fused sentence nor the comma splice is correct. \u00a0Both are found commonly in everyday writing. \u00a0The comma splice is even found in published writing.<\/p>\n<p>The problem with both the fused sentence and the comma splice is that each produces a run-on sentence.\u00a0A run-on sentence is incorrect. \u00a0A simple way to identify one is that its subject changes or is restated without a semicolon or conjunction in between.  There are other punctuation fixes besides the semicolon, but a comma by itself won&#8217;t work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You<\/strong> burnt the cake <strong>she<\/strong> is furious. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<em>Subject change from <strong>you<\/strong> to <strong>she<\/strong>.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>I<\/strong> went to Bill&#8217;s party,\u00a0<strong>I<\/strong> had a great time. \u00a0 \u00a0<em><strong>I<\/strong> is restated.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Facing a fused sentence or a comma splice, the same fixes can be used. \u00a0One solution is to add a conjunction before the second subject; another is to use a semicolon.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tr>\n<td>You burnt the cake, <strong>so<\/strong> she is furious.<\/td>\n<td><em>The conjunction <strong>so<\/strong> fixes the sentence.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<td>You burnt the cake<strong>;<\/strong> she is furious.<\/td>\n<td><em>The semicolon correctly separates the two<br \/>\ncomplete thoughts.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<td>I went to Bill&#8217;s party <strong>and<\/strong> I had a great time.<\/td>\n<td><em>The conjunction <strong>and<\/strong>, probably\u00a0overused in writing, corrects the sentence in this case.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>Fused sentences and comma splices are best gotten rid of.
