CAT scan is the older term.<\/p>\n<p>CT stands <em>computerized tomography<\/em>, whereas CAT stands for <em>computerized axial tomography<\/em>. <\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color:#88bc88;white-space:pre-wrap;font-family:monospace;color:#fffffe;font-size:130%\">\n<span style=\"font-size:130%\"><em>Tomography:<\/em><\/span> a method to produce pictures of internal body structures. Tomography acquires information from many cross-sectional scans.<\/p>\n<p><em>Computerized<\/em> tomography conveys the idea that, once the cross-sectional scans have been taken, a computer program is used to produce an image from their data.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"white-space:pre\"><\/p>\n<p>In the phrase computerized <em>axial<\/em> tomography, the word <em>axial<\/em> refers to the idea that the cross-sectional scans are taken  by revolution around a common axis (axis=line).
