Lightning has flashed twice – the first seemingly as close as if a person was taking our picture with a flash bulb. The thunder shook the house. All the while it’s been snowing.

I’m aware that lightning and thunder happen when warm air is below cold, and there’s a dramatic temperature difference between them. The way I understand, the warm air rushes up, and the cold down, in spirals. As they rub against each other, electrons rub off, forming ions. When the charges resolve, that’s lightning. That explanation mayn’t be absolutely scientific, but it’s a working model.

Seldom do such temperature differences exist around here, but of course we can receive very warm systems that arrive from the tropics. In the winter, one of those systems can collide with a resident cold one, and then the temperature contrast that results in lightning can happen, like tonight. Once again: this isn’t a scientifically researched diagnosis, but my supposition.

I looked at the weather map here. By the time you look at it, I’m sure it will be totally different: it’s my understanding it shows the current weather map. However, checking it as I write this post, it shows a high (cold) top right, with a low (warm) coming in from bottom left. They are colliding on the coast. I guess the thundersnow we’re receiving makes sense.

In a few hours I’ll likely be out for my first round of shovelling this fall. See you then:)

Source:

farmersalmanac.com

Jack of Oracle Tutoring by Jack and Diane, Campbell River, BC.

Self-tutoring about weather: the tutor mentions a phenomenon he’s rarely witnessed, but undoubtedly did this evening.
