If they freeze solid before hitting ground, they&#8217;re sleet. Otherwise, if they&#8217;re still liquid when they hit the ground, but freeze shortly thereafter, it&#8217;s freezing rain.<\/p>\n<p>Freezing rain is what coats everything with a thin layer of ice.
