The Atlas bear lived in the Atlas Mountains of North Africa, and perhaps further east as well. It was around the size of a black bear, but heavier: 450 pounds may have been a typical mass. Large individuals could be twice as heavy. Similar to other bears, it seems to have foraged for such foods as acorns, grasses, nuts, roots, etc.<\/p>\n
The Atlas bear seems to be a victim of humans, having been hunted aggressively in Roman times. It continued to be encountered in the 1800s, with the last known in 1870 in Morocco.<\/p>\n
