Its extreme southeastern border with Iran, starting from about 10 km east of Basrah, is the Shatt al-Arab (called Arvand Rud in Iran), which is the river formed by the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates: it forms the border until the Persian Gulf, about 80km downstream.
