More is the shame, since the weather, for Canada, has been amazing the last few days.

Last night I was feeling worse and worse. By 9pm I knew I’d either die or take some kind of action. I had a splitting headache (which I never get), itchiness in the eyes and nose, and no energy. I’d been relaxing on the couch for the past hour, during which my condition had worsened. Therefore, I knew that I couldn’t “rest” my way out of it.

In such a situation a run has been known to work. I slowly put on my running clothes and wondered if I’d even manage five minutes, the way I was feeling. Yet, I set out: I had to change something, since I didn’t want to feel the way I did, for even one more minute.

Outside, the air was cold and still. (I checked the weather later: it was plus 3.) Of course, it had been dark for hours. I started walking, slowly, to the running field.

After two minutes of walking I felt much better, and started to realize that the run would be possible. During the next two minutes, walking became looser, and I started to feel good.

Above the field, the sky was very dark. A few lights shone from a distance, but the field itself lay in darkness. I began the run.

I wondered, as I ran, what had made me feel so bad earlier. Was it too much looking at the computer screen? Had the environment been too bright for too long? Was the air quality poor? Whatever it was, its effects were all but gone. In the cold, still air, I ran, so glad to feel good again.

To any Canadian east of the Rockies, last night would’ve been a beautiful evening in early spring. Here, however, it didn’t invite many outside. My entire run – about half an hour – I noticed only one other pedestrian, about fifty feet away at one point. Because the air was so still, I could smell that they were drinking an espresso or cappuccino.

The run had to be slow, since the darkness didn’t permit the foot placement you need for fast running. Yet, it did the trick. It’s amazing what some fresh air and exercise can do when you’re short on them.

One final note: I continued to be surprised, as I ran, that with the air so still, no stars presented. I constantly scanned the sky, but continued to see none, which was perplexing. Eventually, however, a couple of stars did appear, for a couple of minutes, then faded back behind some invisible clouds.

Jack of Oracle Tutoring by Jack and Diane, Campbell River, BC.

Self-tutoring about the running lifestyle: the tutor shares an instance.
