Today I wound up watching a video that shows how wool is spun into yarn. From what I observed, I think I understand the principle that makes it possible. Anyone who’s tried to pull a rope free from a pile of others jumbled together understands the concept: although the ropes aren’t formally tied together, they get tangled just by chance. Pulling tighter usually tightens the tangles: then, the rope is impossible to remove by pulling.<\/p>\n
With wool, it’s much the same. Trying to pull some free from a batch of it, the fibres get tangled with others in the batch: eventually you’re pulling the whole batch at once. This is the principle of why yarn holds together.<\/p>\n
