Self-tutoring about life: the tutor reflects on the concept of closed doors.<\/h2>\n

\nREM said “Can’t get there from here,” back in 1985. It’s a quote I’ve seen around, mainly in the 90s. I’ve often wondered what it means.<\/p>\n

\nGeographically, I’ve always thought that “You can’t get there from here” means you have to turn back: you could’ve gotten there from a point you passed.<\/p>\n

\nIn life, you can’t necessarily “go back” – many opportunities exist in unique circumstances which time alone changes. Therefore, “Can’t get there from here” seems more meaningful. Looking back, you might recall a choice you’d like to change, but it’s not presenting now.<\/p>\n

However, not everyone believes in the concept that choices are final. In “Stairway to Heaven”, Robert Plant observes<\/p>\n

Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long runThere’s still time to change the road you’re on\n-Robert Plant & Jimmy Page<\/blockquote>\n

Perhaps, therefore, “Can’t get there from here” is a point of view rather than a fact.<\/p>\n
