\nWhen I was in grade two, a girl presented a new ring she was wearing: a “mood ring.” The teacher asked her a couple of questions about it, but didn’t seem surprised. I’d never heard of such a thing. I think the color of her ring, at that moment, was green. The teacher acknowledged it was a nice gift – that, to have received it, the girl must be very “grown-up.”<\/p>\n
\nNot long after, that same teacher showed us a mood ring she herself was wearing. This surprised me, because the teacher was no spring chicken; I thought her a little old to be interested in something so fanciful. Remember, that was in the 70s, when there was a much firmer line between adults and kids. Moreover, that teacher seemed to prefer concrete ideas rather than feelings.<\/p>\n
\nMaybe six weeks later, our class enraged the teacher somehow. It wasn’t serious, but rather that old-school outrage teachers sometimes got stoked into when the whole class missed a homework assignment, did poorly on a test, or what have you. She held up her mood ring: indeed, it was jet black. I might have been more convinced, by that situation, that mood rings really do work.<\/p>\n
That was in 1978; I don’t recall seeing mood rings past 1981 or so. Yet, apparently, they are still popular among certain demographics. They came out in 1975.<\/p>\n
