To a gen-Z or millenial, even whispering something to them that they don’t want to hear will likely be described as “yelling.”

Back in the 70s, yelling (for real) was probably overused, but was effective in emergency situations. What about now?

I recall a gen-Z person from a house nearby, mad at their spouse as a result of an exchange in the driveway, getting into their car to drive away from the the situation. (Likely wise.) The spouse they were mad at, with their friend, was standing behind the mad spouse’s car and didn’t notice what was happening.

In the 70s or 80s, the mad person would have probably yelled out something like “Can’t you idiots see I’m leaving? Get out of the way!” While it’s probably not an ideal thing to say, it would communicate that the people behind the car, for their own safety, should move from the car’s path. Yet, what does a gen-Z person do? (Remember: they are forbidden to yell or even talk sternly.)

This gen-Z person just started driving the car backwards, almost running down the two behind the car. I think the car touched one of them, but they were also gen-Z people, so had good reflexes and were both able to move away in time. The mad spouse drove out of the driveway and sped away.

Well, there one has it: apparently, a gen-Z person might rather risk running someone down than “yell” at them to warn them. One has to admit that seems to show true commitment to “not yelling.”

Jack of Oracle Tutoring by Jack and Diane, Campbell River, BC.

Self-tutoring about how different generations perceive things: the tutor gives an example.
