\nOne doesn’t hear the name Barack Obama very often any more, even though he was President from 2008-2016 (technically Jan 2009-Jan 2017), and well-loved. Joe the Plumber became famous as well during the 2008 campaign, because he asked Obama a question about taxes while the cameras were rolling. It was Oct 12, 2008, in Toledo, Ohio, a sunny, beautiful autumn day. Obama, in his collared white shirt with sleeves rolled up, answered Joe’s question with frankness and sensitivity.<\/p>\n
\nEven so, Joe the Plumber didn’t seem to like the idea of taxing the rich more to give lower-income people a tax break; rather, he seemed to prefer a flat tax. After talking with Obama, he became part of John McCain’s campaign. Of course, Obama went on to win.<\/p>\n
\nIn autumn 2008, the US faced so much uncertainty that “everyday people” Americans could relate to became perhaps all the more important. It’s true that Joe the Plumber came to represent McCain’s campaign. Yet, I think his polite, spontaneous conversation with Obama on that sunny day in Toledo probably helped Obama’s campaign more than anything Joe the Plumber did on McCain’s side.<\/p>\n
\nJoe the Plumber, at age 49, died August 27, 2023. John McCain is deceased as of 2018. Barack Obama is 62.<\/p>\n
