\nI mention back in my Nov 18, 2022 post<\/a> that I take a transit bus to work.<\/p>\n \nWhat I want to talk about now is that I enjoy taking the bus to work: I infinitely prefer transit over driving.<\/p>\n \nLikely the first reason that, to me, transit is much preferable to driving is the parking issue. Here on the west coast, parking is often hard to find. Moreover, it’s unpredictable: some days parking can be much more difficult than others.<\/p>\n \nEqually important is the issue of traffic. Why duel in changing lanes, etc, when you can relax on the bus and have a professional do all the weaving and navigating through rush hour traffic?<\/p>\n \nThe third reason, which is a blend of the first two, is the stress equation: driving in traffic, then trying to find a place to park, is stressful. I can’t face that at the beginning of a work day, especially if it can make me late to work.<\/p>\n \nIt seems to me that most people see the situation oppositely to how I do: given the means, they prefer to drive. The main reason they give is that they don’t like waiting; when they drive to work, they feel in control. Somewhat ironically, they admit that they must leave much earlier than they would need to arrive on time, in order to secure parking. This can often mean leaving half an hour earlier for work, when the commute itself isn’t even that long. In that case, waiting for the bus seems to pale in importance, to me.<\/p>\n \nThe determination of drivers to maintain the custom of driving in spite of its disadvantages seems impressive.
