Right “now,” though, was when the anticipation would start.

I always loved the anticipation phase. One would start out a bit fatigued from the week’s work, so might relax with a coffee while reading the paper. It was the time available that made that so special: one didn’t have to hurry. If the paper was particularly interesting (I would read the business section), it might take two coffees. My wife and my friends would reach out at some point with evening plans.

The ensuing party would be fun and all, but usually couldn’t beat the lead-up. I’ve often wondered why, but I think I can explain. I’m sure I’m not the first with these notions.

Anticipating something, one thinks of all the good things that can possibly happen. Yet, in reality, one good thing will probably prevent another from happening. Therefore, the anticipation, not bounded by the same reality that constrains the actual party, might be richer with good feelings. This might be especially true after a tiring week: it takes little effort to read the paper and daydream, but partying itself can be quite an expense of effort.

I recall, as a kid, staying home some Friday nights to watch television and then wondering why I didn’t do it more often.

Jack of Oracle Tutoring by Jack and Diane, Campbell River, BC.

Self-tutoring about lifestyle and philosophy: the tutor reflects about anticipation vs what happens.
