\nI recall, as a child, watching my father tie knots in various situations of quick improvisation. He had grown up around farming, and was also a military man. He never made a big deal about any of those things, but I never saw him hesitate while tying a knot, nor did a knot he made ever fail. Moreover, he untied them just as easily as he had tied them.<\/p>\n
\nMy father did not convey to me his knot-tying skills, nor did I need them for decades. Eventually, however, I would end up in yard work situations, working on the roof and such, where I would need to know how to tie knots.<\/p>\n
\nThe bowline was the first one I learned; lately I’ve moved on to the Zeppelin bend. I’ve used both these knots with success.<\/p>\n
