\nAdaptive radiation is likely one of the best-loved ideas relating to evolution. It starts with an original, single species that has a number of niches available. The concept is that of the original species, some members will choose one niche, some another, and so on. Those niches might include different foods or different lifestyles. Over time, due to adaptation to the niche-defined conditions, the members of one niche may be noticeably different from those of another, even though their recent ancestors all looked the same. Eventually, the members of each different niche may indeed become their own species, having differentiated enough from their original one.<\/p>\n
Therefore, one original species may give rise to many others as its members choose different niches and then their future generations evolve new, adaptive characteristics. The successors’ DNA, encoding these adaptive changes, will somewhat differ from what the original species has\/had. Importantly, members of one niche may not think of members of another as potential mates, despite the fact that their recent ancestors were all the same species.<\/p>\n
