\nAs I recall, here on Canada’s west coast, we used to hear about Pineapple Express weather systems back from 2000 to 2012 or so. As I understood, they brought tropical rain straight from Hawaii. I could believe that, too: I recall sometimes the weather might be drizzly and 5°C, but an hour later it was pouring rain and 11°C. I’d notice the temp increase indoors, and wonder what had happened. Stepping outdoors, under cover, felt almost like walking into a sauna. Such was the Pineapple Express at its finest.<\/p>\n
\nTo my knowledge, we didn’t call the Pineapple Express an atmospheric river back then, but that’s what it was. Apparently, an atmospheric river can produce a discharge comparable to that from the Mississippi River.<\/p>\n
