It was bare on its lower half, but was frosty from its middle to its top. I wondered why this might be.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe idea I decided on was that water in the ground under the staircase, with its residual heat, was keeping the lower half unfrosted. Gaining height, the ground would have less residual water, because of settling. As a result, less residual heat would be available to keep the stairs warm.
