\nThe following is according to my understanding.<\/p>\n
\nI mention in my post from November 4, 2025,<\/a> that after around eleven years of virtually maintenance-free operation, the Briggs and Stratton engine on the lawnmower I use is surging. It still starts, runs, and cuts the full lawn without stalling; however, it surges periodically. There is no doubt in my mind that surging suggests a problem that needs to be fixed.<\/p>\n \nWell, I got sidetracked with a number of other issues, so almost forgot about the mower. Living here, though, it’s hard to forget about it for long, since people are still mowing their lawns, even this time of year. Yesterday I researched what I might be up against.<\/p>\n \nThe very first issue I looked into was the air filter, likely dirty and perhaps blocking air? Since one has to remove it anyway to get to the carburetor, it seemed worth a look. I may have found the problem: while it looked brand new on top, its bottom, where is draws air, was very dirty and likely clogged.<\/p>\n \nAfter removing it, I washed the air filter in soap and water. It’s my understanding that next I will have to oil it, but we’re not there yet; although it was sunny yesterday, it was too cool outside for the filter to fully dry in the sun.
