It was the early to mid 90s, and among the students I hung out with, almost nobody had a car. Perhaps today it’s quite different.

As still seems true today at university in general, back then there was a lot of left-wing thinking among the student body. It makes sense: somebody with no assets, who barely makes any money, probably isn’t too afraid of income tax.

I recall being on the bus and overhearing a conversation between two other fellow UVic students. We didn’t know each other, but I recognized them from the morning coffee line-up. Back then, as today, Canada Post was in the news. Some people were saying it should make money.

“Anyway,” one of the students commented, “whether Canada Post makes money or not seems beside the point. I think they should just deliver the (expletive) mail.”

Such was the charming, even reassuring, simplicity of a student’s point of view. Yet, keep in mind that today, more than thirty years later, that person is just as likely an executive in some office tower. In my experience, not too many people went to university for academic reasons, myself being an exception.

What that student was saying, without saying it, was likely the following: a serious country is expected to have a public postal service. A serious public postal service accepts mail from everyone, and delivers to everyone in that country. Therefore, Canada Post is one of the institutions that define, and sustain, Canada.

To be fair to Canada Post, governments seem willing to shovel money into other services without talk of curtailing them.

Jack of Oracle Tutoring by Jack and Diane, Campbell River, BC.

Self-tutoring about Canadian lifestyle, etc: the tutor begins about Canada Post.
