The following is according to my understanding.<\/p>\n
\nI’ve never had a dog; we did have a few cats when I was a kid. Back then, life was simple: pets ate pet food. The cats got ham or tuna sometimes, but that was all. I didn’t imagine giving them human food.<\/p>\n
\nYears later, I heard that chocolate is poisonous to dogs and cats. I wondered why that might be, since humans seem unbothered by it.<\/p>\n
\nIt turns out cats and dogs struggle to metabolize both caffeine and theobromine, both of which are in chocolate. Therefore, said compounds can build up to toxic levels in dogs and cats. Moreover, both theobromine and caffeine affect the nervous system.<\/p>\n
In contrast, humans seem easily able to cope with the levels of caffeine and theobromine found in chocolate.<\/p>\n
\nAt first glance, a lot of animals seem more durable than humans. Yet, on reflection, perhaps it’s the other way around. Humans, naturally accustomed to a more varied diet than most other animals, seem to be less delicate. Perhaps that’s why, when I was a kid, pets ate pet food, not human food.<\/p>\n
