{"id":52411,"date":"2026-05-29T16:55:06","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T16:55:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/?p=52411"},"modified":"2026-05-29T17:03:44","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T17:03:44","slug":"french-the-subjunctive-part-three","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/french-the-subjunctive-part-three\/","title":{"rendered":"French: the subjunctive, part three"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2>Self-tutoring about French: the tutor mentions formation of the subjunctive.<\/h2>\n<p>\nThe following is according to my understanding.<\/p>\n<p>\nI mention some primary ideas about the subjunctive in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/french-the-present-subjunctive-part-1\/\">my post from April 15, 2026.<\/a> Typically, present subjunctive is the stem from ils\/elles, then with the endings -e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, or -ent.<\/p>\n<p>\nWith French verbs, irregular ones are often a point of concern for learners. Yet, how is the subjunctive affected by irregularity?<\/p>\n<p>\nIt seems that with five verbs &#8211; \u00eatre, avoir, faire, savoir, and aller &#8211; the subjunctive is not predictable. The reason is that, for those verbs, the subjunctive isn&#8217;t recognizable from the present indicative ils\/elles form of the verb.<\/p>\n<p>\nYet, for most verbs, even irregular ones, it seems worth a shot to form the subjunctive from the stem of the ils\/elles form of the present indicative, then the appropriate ending.<\/p>\n<p>\nSource:<\/p>\n<p>\nKenney, M., Burville, V., Hickox, B., Hill, J., Potter, C.
