{"id":7259,"date":"2014-12-23T07:59:27","date_gmt":"2014-12-23T07:59:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/?p=7259"},"modified":"2014-12-23T07:59:27","modified_gmt":"2014-12-23T07:59:27","slug":"statistics-an-easy-estimate-of-the-standard-deviation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/statistics-an-easy-estimate-of-the-standard-deviation\/","title":{"rendered":"Statistics:  an easy estimate of the standard deviation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Tutoring statistics, I&#8217;m happy to add this method to my repertoire. \u00a0The tutor brings forth a shortcut for finding the standard deviation.<\/h1>\n<p>According to my source listed below, the standard deviation (\u03c3) can be estimated as follows:<\/p>\n<p><center>\u03c3=range\/6<\/center><br \/>\nThe range is defined as the\u00a0<em>greatest-least<\/em> values of the data set.<\/p>\n<p>The reasoning behind the estimate is that, with a normal distribution, 99.7% of the data lies between\u00a0\u00b5-3\u03c3 and \u00b5+3\u03c3,\u00a0\u00b5 being the mean, or center point, of the data. \u00a0(\u00b5+3\u03c3) &#8211; (\u00b5-3\u03c3)=\u00b5+3\u03c3-\u00b5+3\u03c3=6\u03c3, but also equals the range.
