{"id":81,"date":"2012-08-25T19:18:52","date_gmt":"2012-08-25T19:18:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/?p=81"},"modified":"2012-08-25T19:18:52","modified_gmt":"2012-08-25T19:18:52","slug":"the-semicolon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oracletutoring.ca\/blog\/the-semicolon\/","title":{"rendered":"The Semicolon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome back.<\/p>\n<p>While tutoring English, punctuation is a constant concern.\u00a0\u00a0Using a variety of punctuation\u00a0leads to\u00a0sentence variety &#8211; something that always impresses English teachers.<\/p>\n<p>The semicolon can be used in many ways, but\u00a0its simplest\u00a0use is\u00a0to join two <em>short<\/em>, but complete sentences.<\/p>\n<p>a)\u00a0 The weather turned to rain.\u00a0 They canceled the\u00a0game.<\/p>\n<p>can become<\/p>\n<p>b)\u00a0 The weather turned to rain;\u00a0they canceled the game.<\/p>\n<p>The construction in b) brings the writing to a much higher level.\u00a0 Note that even though the semicolon joins two complete sentences, the resulting sentence\u00a0can still be pleasantly short and inviting to read.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t overuse semicolons.\u00a0 A few times a page is\u00a0enough.<\/p>\n<p>Happy writing.
