Hello.\u00a0 One of the most dreaded topics in high school math – as you’ll quickly find out if you do math tutoring – is radicals.<\/p>\n

Well, here’s our first math post: simplifying radicals. Today, we’ll look at square roots only.<\/p>\n

For example, consider the following:<\/p>\n

Simplify \u221a90<\/p>\n

Well, here’s what we do:<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0 Find the number that divides into 90 and is “square rootable”.<\/p>\n

In this case it’s 9, since \u221a9 is exactly\u00a03.<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0 Realize that \u221a90 =\u00a0 (\u221a9)(\u221a10)<\/p>\n

Since 9×10=90.<\/p>\n

3)\u00a0 Replace \u221a9 with 3.<\/p>\n

(\u221a9)(\u221a10) = 3\u221a10<\/p>\n

So \u221a90 = 3\u221a10.<\/p>\n

This is a basic case of simplifying a radical.<\/p>\n
