English: what does arcane mean?

The tutor brings up a definition he’s long wondered about.

The word arcane seems rarely used nowadays, but I’ve always thought it a great word. When I encountered it yesterday, I looked it up:

arcane: shrouded in mystery; nebulous by reason of complexity

A text written in an ancient language, for instance, might be described as arcane.
