Technology: the Internet of Things
Self-tutoring about a modern technology trend: the tutor begins with a definition.
The Internet of Things literally refers to things online rather than people. Nowadays, an electronic device – for instance, a smoke detector or even a light bulb – could have a microprocessor in it. However, something you don’t even think is electronic could be – a pill bottle, for instance, or a pair of glasses might have an embedded microcomputer that can link to the internet. Your glasses might broadcast information about you to an internet entity.
Of course, the concept that humans aren’t even involved in some data collecting and processing lurks at the fringe of the universe of endless devices – many unknown – in constant communication. Deep in the web, artificially intelligent entities may analyze humans and make plans for them, facilitated by the Internet of Things. Who would ever know?
