Yard work: weed whipper fix, part II

Self-tutoring about yard work and improvisation: the tutor mentions a quick fix.

I mention in my post from June 2 about a quick fix to the weed whipper that worked for three years. Around the end of May a different problem developed on the weed whipper, so a different fix was needed.

Once again, the auto-feed was giving too much line. This time the restraint was broken, rather than weak: stiffening it would no longer work.

From the spinner housing, I removed the spool altogether. Then I cut a piece of filament about 13″, which I strung through one of the holes in the spinner, fully around the central shaft (so the filament wouldn’t slip to one side), then out the hole on the opposite side. Next I replaced the cover.

It works fine, but when the filament finally breaks off (around every hour or two of use) it needs to be replaced manually, which takes around 5 minutes.

My son says the whipper’s never worked so well. Sometimes, the most primitive fix turns out to be the best:)
